History of the Livestrong Wristband: Texas Monthly's July Cover Story

Two hands, one wearing a yellow wristband, hold a yellow magazine

The Livestrong Wristband was launched in May 2004 in partnership with Nike. It cost 15 cents to produce, selling for just $1 (as it still does today), with proceeds supporting cancer survivorship programs. The wristband became a widespread cultural symbol, worn by celebrities, athletes, and even politicians, representing unity and support for cancer awareness.

The wristband remains a powerful symbol of hope and solidarity against cancer, having sold nearly 100 million globally. In the 20 years since it was introduced, Livestrong has continued its mission to improve quality of life for cancer survivors, providing fertility assistance, cancer-informed fitness training, free online resource support, advocacy, and more.

With cancer diagnoses in the U.S. rising from 1.3 million the year the wristband was launched to over 2 million this year, this yellow accessory highlights the enduring need for support and community among those impacted by cancer.

Featuring interviews with individuals behind the creation of the wristband, current Livestrong staff, and more, Emily McCullar’s Texas Monthly piece presents an inspiring oral history of the making of the wristband and the hope it sparked.
