Rare Diagnosis, Rare Talent: Golfer Ian Gilligan’s Story of Cancer Survivorship

Childhood cancer couldn't stop rising golf star Ian Gilligan from chasing his dreams.

Ian Gilligan was just 15 when he was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. So rare, in fact, that he was one of only 20 children around the world with this disease.

As uncertainty spread, Ian was unsure if he would be able to carry on with his true passion of golf. With the first symptom manifesting as pain under his left arm, treatment could impact the mobility of his swing. Dealing with this extremely rare cancer as a high school student felt isolating.

Fortunately, Ian responded well to treatment and was soon able to get back out on the course. Golf provided a respite from being a cancer patient, bringing a welcome sense of normality. Getting outside, moving, and spending time with friends and teammates helped him focus on the positives.

Fitness in Survivorship

Staying active can do more than get one’s mind off things. Those who exercise in cancer survivorship can experience:

  • Future cancer risk reduction of 20-50%
  • Improved quality of life
  • Decreased mortality rate
  • Lifted mood
  • Reduced risk for other diseases

Livestrong offers two programs designed to get survivors moving after cancer:

  1. CancerFit, our newest program that equips personal trainers to provide fitness instruction with cancer survivors in mind.
  2. Livestrong at the YMCA, a 12-week exercise class for cancer survivors, available at free or low cost at YMCAs across the U.S.

Golfing for Good

Now a senior on the University of Florida Golf team, Ian inspires others on the course with not only his story of survivorship but also with his skill, now #8 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and winning this summer’s Western Amateur. With a new appreciation for life, Ian wants to use his platform for good.

“I know firsthand how challenging the fight against cancer can be. It’s a battle that requires an army,” he said. “That’s why I’ve partnered with Livestrong – to help empower others facing this battle and shed light on the army that is Livestrong. Together, we can drive awareness, provide resources, and inspire hope for every affected by this horrible disease.”

Ian will soon graduate, and we can’t wait to cheer him on in his next golf endeavors. This survivor of a rare cancer has a rare talent that is sure to inspire other young patients for years to come. Follow his journey on Instagram at @ian.gilligan
