Esophageal cancer happens when cells in the esophagus, the organ that carries food from the throat to the stomach, grow uncontrollably. There are two types of esophageal cancer. Adenocarcinoma typically occurs in the esophagus’ lower mucus-making tissues. Squamous Cell Carcinoma typically occurs in the upper and middle cells of the esophagus. Esophageal cancer is seen more frequently in men than women, most commonly in those 60 and up. Because symptoms often do not manifest until the cancer has spread, most esophageal cancers are diagnosed in later stages.
