Skin Cancer
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Learn about the different types of skin cancer and find resources to help you care for your skin after treatment.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. It is caused primarily by ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage to skin cells as a result of too much sun exposure. The main types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer due to its potential to spread. While BCC and SCC are usually treatable, sun protection and regular skin checks are essential for prevention and early detection. Risk factors include fair skin, frequent sun exposure, history of sunburns, a weakened immune system, and older age. Skin cancer can affect anyone, but white individuals are at a higher risk.
