Fertility preservation is a life-changing decision that many cancer patients don’t even know they need to make.

After hearing the words “you have cancer,” patients may feel shock, uncertainty, and confusion, the prospect of having children in the future far from their minds. The window between being diagnosed with cancer and preserving fertility is short, as treatments may increase risks for fertility problems or cause infertility. Preservation can feel like an expensive burden on top of everything patients are already facing.

Livestrong Fertility is proud to have helped alleviate this burden for 19,000 people, saving them a total of over $100 million in fertility expenses. Every day, in the midst of chaos, patients and their loved ones are given the hope of a chance to build a future family after cancer treatment through discounted preservation services and free medications, and the program is excited to support thousands more.

To help alleviate a portion of the fertility cost burden, New York enacted fertility preservation coverage in January of 2020, requiring insurance providers to cover 3 rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) for individuals who have been diagnosed with infertility. Today, 18 states in the U.S. have some form of preservation coverage. On September 10, Livestrong President & CEO Suzanne Stone will join the Alliance for Fertility Preservation‘s New York Policy Forum to discuss whether this insurance mandate increased cancer survivors’ ability to access fertility services in New York. This conversation will unite clinicians, survivors, and more to discuss the state of fertility preservation today and for future patients.
