Livestrong board member pledges Jim Owens Memorial Match in honor of late brother

Livestrong board member John Owens and wife Pat Strong have pledged a generous fundraising match opportunity in memory of John’s late brother Jim, who passed away from brain cancer in 2009.

From 3 pm CST on Monday, September 9 until the funds run out, all donations to the Livestrong Challenge will be matched up to $25,000.*

This is so much more than a match. Jim Owens was a beloved brother, son, husband, father, and friend to those who knew him. The community he found as an advocate, spokesperson, fundraiser, and cyclist with Livestrong was meaningful to him and remains important to John and Pat. Funds raised in Jim’s memory will fuel programs that make life easier for those facing cancer today, including:

Discounted fertility preservation services so survivors can add to their families after treatment

Cancer-informed fitness training to help survivors get back on their feet

Free 1:1 resource support to connect patients with the help they need

Community engagement programs on college campuses to bring together students affected by cancer

John and Pat are also motivated to fundraise in honor of their family’s next generation. “When I began my work for cancer survivors, the statistic was 1.5 million annually diagnosed in the US. Today that number is 2 million,” John says, with young adult diagnoses especially on the rise. Thanks to the “In Memory of Jim Owens” match, donations to the Livestrong Challenge will go twice as far in providing services and hope to those who need it most.
