Kidney cancer occurs when cells in the kidney become malignant and grow uncontrollably, which can lead to a tumor. It has a variety of types, the most common being renal cell cancer, making up about 90% of cases.

Kidney cancer occurs more frequently in men and Black and Native American individuals. Most cases are diagnosed in adults aged 65-74. It is rare for children to be diagnosed with kidney cancer. The main type of kidney cancer seen in children is a Wilms tumor.
