LIVESTRONG LAUNCHES FIRST RESPONDER RIDE FOR RESILIENCE
A 343-MILE JOURNEY TO HONOR 9/11 HEROES AND SUPPORT FIRST RESPONDER CANCER SURVIVORS
Lyft and Citi Bike partner to provide bike rides to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City
Austin, Texas [Date], 2026: – Twenty-five years after 9/11, LIVESTRONG is launching the First Responder Ride for Resilience – a five-day, 343-mile bike ride from Boston to the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, one mile for each of the 343 FDNY firefighters lost that day.
Hosted by LIVESTRONG in partnership with Friends of Firefighters and the Boston Fire Cancer Foundation, the ride honors those firefighters and confronts the health crisis still facing first responders today: Cancer is now the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service, with firefighters 9% more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and 14% more likely to die from the disease than the general public (NIOSH). The initiative will bring together first responders, cancer survivors, and community advocates to raise funds to support critical cancer survivorship and mental health programs for first responders and their families.
The ride starts September 6 in Boston and will travel through communities across Massachusetts and Connecticut before concluding in New York City on September 10. To expand access and enable more people to ride with the first responder community, Lyft and Citi Bike are providing 25 ebikes for the final leg into Manhattan, stopping at the 9/11 Memorial and concluding at Battery Park.
“The first responder community showed extraordinary courage on 9/11 and continues to valiantly serve our nation,” said Suzanne Stone, LIVESTRONG President and CEO. “Twenty-five years later, many of the people who ran toward the towers are still facing cancer and trauma because of it. This ride is how we show them they’re not alone. We’re grateful for partners like Lyft who share our commitment to supporting this community’s well-being.”
“New York City’s first responders embody service, heroism, and resilience – exactly what this ride commemorates,” said Patrick Knoth, General Manager of Citi Bike. “In the spirit of our mission to serve and connect, Lyft is honored to join the final miles of this powerful journey to the 9/11 Memorial, riding alongside the people who show up for New Yorkers and our communities every day.”
