Multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer, occurs in plasma cells, a type of white blood cells. When these healthy blood cells become cancerous, they create abnormal antibodies known as M proteins. Effects of multiple myeloma can impact the bones, kidneys, and healthy blood cell production and make it more difficult for the body to fight infections.
Multiple myeloma occurs more frequently in men, Black individuals, and adults over 65.
